Licensed vs. Unlicensed
Hiring a contractor is an important decision, much like hiring an attorney or a physician. The State of licensure regulates who is fully qualified to practice skilled trades for the given nature. In our case the State of Florida’s “Electrical Contractor’s Board” governs our practice, which is part of the “Department of Business and Professional Regulation”. The department establishes the mandated requirements for licensure, which consists of verified education, verified experience, and a difficult proctored examination. After all prerequisites have been fully satisfied, the State will perform all background checks and will require proof of liability insurance and any other bonding insurances before any contracting work can begin. These stringent requirements are to protect the public’s best interest, your safety.
When you hire a “Licensed Contractor”, you’re hiring a professional that knows the laws which govern their business, the building code requirements for proper design and installation, which the State has already approved for you.
Unlicensed individuals/businesses are commonly referred to as “trunk slammers” or “fly by night operations”. These individuals don’t know the laws, the building code to properly construct a well designed system/structure, nor will they be insured or checked out by the State. Their only concern is to slap something together, hope it works, collect the money and then move on to the next victim.
If you hire an unlicensed individual, you assume all responsibilities which may include damaged property, loss of personal property, personal injury/death, in addition to possible fines and lawsuits. Is the risk worth it?
In today’s world, anyone will say or advertise the work they perform is licensed activity, or try to convince you the work doesn’t require a license. Protect yourself, your family and your property by exercising due diligence by asking for proof of a license number and proof of insurance, then research the information.
